BBC micro:bit V2.21 Go Starter Kit for Coding

The BBC micro:bit V2.21 Go Starter Kit provides the board and essential accessories needed to begin exploring coding, electronics and physical computing. It is suitable for individual learning, classroom activities, coding clubs, workshops and creative technology projects.

The micro:bit is a compact programmable single board computer that helps users understand how software and hardware work together. Programs can control the LED display, react to movement and sound, communicate wirelessly or interact with electronic components connected through the edge connector.

What Is Included in the Go Kit?

This is a single micro:bit Go kit.

  • One BBC micro:bit V2 board
  • One Micro USB cable
  • One battery pack for two AAA batteries
  • Two AAA batteries
  • One quick start user guide
  • One safety leaflet
  • One cardboard battery pack holder
  • One sticker

The coloured accents on the micro:bit board are supplied in red, yellow, green or blue. The colour is selected randomly and cannot be chosen when ordering.

Built In Display, Controls and Sensors

The front of the micro:bit includes a 5 x 5 matrix containing 25 red LEDs. This display can present numbers, words, symbols, animations and simple graphics. The LEDs can also estimate the amount of ambient light reaching the board.

Two programmable buttons provide direct input for games, controls and interactive exercises. The gold micro:bit logo also functions as a capacitive touch input, giving projects an additional programmable control.

An integrated microphone enables programs to respond to sounds and measure sound levels. A dedicated indicator shows when the microphone is active. The built in speaker allows the board to play tones, music and other programmed sounds without requiring an external speaker.

Movement and Environmental Sensing

The integrated motion sensor combines an accelerometer and magnetometer. It can detect movement, orientation, shaking and magnetic fields, making it useful for games, alarms, movement experiments and digital compass projects.

The application processor also contains a temperature sensor that can provide an estimate of the surrounding temperature. Together with the LED light sensing and microphone, this gives users several ways to create projects that respond to their environment.

Wireless Communication and Expansion

The board supports communication between micro:bit devices through its 2.4 GHz radio. It also includes Bluetooth 5.1 with Bluetooth Low Energy, allowing compatible projects to communicate with phones, tablets and other devices.

The notched edge connector provides access to power and programmable input and output pins. Crocodile clips, conductive thread and compatible electronic accessories can be attached when expanding a project with lights, switches, sensors, motors or robotics equipment.

Programming the BBC micro:bit

A computer, tablet or compatible phone is needed to create and transfer a program to the board. Beginners can use Microsoft MakeCode for visual block based programming, while users who want to work with written code can use the micro:bit Python Editor.

After the program has been transferred, the micro:bit can operate independently using the included battery pack. This allows users to build portable projects without keeping the board connected to a computer.
